The prolonged blockage of this neurotransmitter has disastrous consequences on cognitive faculties. According to research conducted by the University of Washington that followed more than 3,500 elderly people over a decade, regular use of anticholinergics increases the risk of developing dementia by 54%. This risk increases proportionately with the dose and duration of treatment.
3. Proton pump inhibitors (Omeprazole)
Omeprazole, pantoprazole or esomeprazole are among the inhibitors of the proton pump (PPI), massively consumed to soothe heartburn, gastric reflux and gastritis. If they offer quick relief by reducing gastric acidity, their chronic use is alarming for neurological health.
A study of nearly 6 000 individuals found that 33% of patients who have consumed these drugs for more than four and a half years had cognitive impairment. This phenomenon is largely explained by the fact that the decrease in gastric acidity prevents the proper absorption of vitamin B12. Prolonged vitamin B12 deficiency is a known cause of severe neurological disorders and increased risk of dementia.

4. The benzodiazepines
Alprazolam, diazepam or lorazepam are familiar names for anyone who has ever suffered from severe anxiety or insomnia. These anxiolytics and sleeping pills offer short-term soothing, but their long-term impact on the brain is particularly heavy.

Just like the Parkinson’s disease drugs mentioned above, these antidepressants inhibit acetylcholine. Elderly patients are particularly sensitive and may experience accelerated cognitive decline, characterized by high confusion, frequent memory loss and inability to concentrate.
